In early May, Artcurial organizes an exceptional sale of streetwear accessories and contemporary art named Don’t believe the Hype.
Supreme, Kaws, Murakami, Futura, Damien Hirst, Medicom, Chanel, Molodkin, Bansky and many others: a multitude of brands and artists come to animate this sale from a particularly well equipped collector. Although his identity is not revealed, the anonymous has gathered this impressive collection by meeting the artists in person and growing along with this culture that combines street culture, street art and contemporary art. This is how he was able to gather such rare pieces, notably the highlight of this sale: an extremely rare 1.20 m Kaws Companion signed in 2008. The curator testifies:
Thanks to this sale, I have the impression of passing and relaying generations between the past and the present. My driving force in life has always been to try to share and transmit what I know.
At a time when collaborations are legion, the resell market is omnipresent whatever the item and where luxury houses mix with streetwear brands, the seller also expresses himself.
I have no judgment on this generational phenomenon. This is an evolution that must be neither good nor bad. You have to accept it. But of course I would just like a little more depth and meaning to what comes out every day on the market. It’s a pity there isn’t a smarter relay because people need to understand how we went from CHANEL × BEARBRICK in 2006 to SUPREME × LOUIS VUITTON in 2017 and KAWS × DIOR in 2018; it’s an incredible evolution and it took a long time
and projects to change luxury to that extent. It’s no coincidence and there’s a whole generation of streetwear that has grown, mutated and pushed for it.
This Artcurial auction Don’t believe the Hype is to be followed on May 5 at 5 p.m. at the 7 rond-point des Champs Élysée. Find some of the items below as well as on the sale page.
