American Sniper

American Sniper is based on the true story of Chris Kyle, a U.S. Army sniper who was sent to Iraq many times. Kyle travels back and forth between the United States and the Middle East several times to fight Al Qaeda. After more than 100 casualties, the character played by Bradley Cooper suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Although the film focuses on a positive image of America, it also looks at the negative impact of the war on the soldiers’ minds.

 

The Big Short

The Big Short is a film that tells the story of several financial actors who took advantage of the huge crisis of 2007 to make millions of dollars. The big positive point of this film is its accessibility: you don’t need to be a finance pro to understand The Big Short. Indeed, several personalities such as Selena Gomez or Margot Robbie intervene directly in the film to explain the terms used. At their side, the casting is provided by great actors such as Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling or Brad Pitt.

 

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is one of the great classics of cinema. Throughout the film, we follow the eventful life of Forrest, presented as a simpleton. Despite his deceptive appearance, he takes part in the Vietnam War and becomes an important figure invited to the White House and inspiring John Lennon or Elvis Presley. He also became an American football champion, ping-pong player, marathon runner… Forrest Gump won 6 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor.

 

Pulp Fiction

If you’ve never watched Pulp Fiction before, this may finally be your chance to see it. Quentin Tarantino’s second film mixes three intertwined stories of Los Angeles gangsters. The result is a very well crafted and funny film that has become cult over the years. It won the Oscar for best screenplay.

 

Django Unchained

Another film by Quentin Tarantino and winner of two Oscars, Django Unchained is a western following the journey of a freed slave who wants to free his wife. He teams up with a German doctor who agrees to free him and help him find his wife. Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz deliver a very good performance in Django Unchained.

 

Whiplash

Andrew is a 19 year old who wants to become the best jazz drummer today. He is spotted by a drum teacher and a film is made about the relationship between these two characters. The teacher pushes Andrew to the limit and gives him a hard time to reach excellence, between friendly advice and insults. Whiplash has received three Oscars and is not exclusively dedicated to jazz fans.

 

Midnight Express

On a trip to Turkey, Billy tries to return home with 2 kilos of cannabis, but is arrested at the airport. He ends up locked up in a Turkish prison with an exaggerated sentence and is forced to live in a nightmarish environment. The very touching film Midnight Express is sublimated by a soundtrack that has become cult and has won two Oscars.

 

Birdman

Birdman is a film constructed in one single sequence shot, shot as if the camera had never stopped. It tells the story of a former actor who is trying to become a director of a Broadway play. But he gets lost several times between his former fictional role as a superhero and his real life as a director. Birdman has won three Academy Awards.
