This weekend, Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s collaboration on the film Black Panther is in the running for the 91st Oscar ceremony. The song is selected to compete in the category “Best Original Song”. He now has more than 196 million hits on YouTube, making it one of the favorite songs to win the prize. However, the famous American ceremony took time to award prizes to rappers, regardless of their contribution to the film industry.

Eminem the OG

It was only in 2003 that, for the first time in Oscar history, a rapper took over the prestigious award for “Best Original Song”. It is the legendary title “Lose Yourself” by Eminem for “8 Mile”, a feature film inspired by his own career in which he plays the main character.

Three 6 Mafia

Three years after this unique victory for the world of rap, it is now Three-6 Mafia’s turn to take over the ceremony. They therefore became the first hip-hop band to win the same reward with their title “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” from Craig Brewer’s film Hustle & Flow.

Common et P Diddy, the awards’ machines

Afterwards, the victories followed with the consecration of Common in 2016 for the title “Glory” from the movie “Selma” directed by Ava DuVernay. The famous rapper from Chicago would go on to have a remarkable career. He made history by winning an Emmy Award in 2017 with his title “Letter to the free” for the 13 the documentary 13th, after having already won three Grammys and an Oscar. P Diddy also won one in 2012, thanks to his documentary “Undefeated”, which tells the story of young American football players from the Manassas Tigers team.

Nothing is decided for Kendrick Lamar

However, this does not mean that everything is decided for Kendrick Lamar, as there are also serious competitors in front of him. Included are Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper with A Star is Born, who are widely favoured. However, Black Panther really scored at the world box office, generating nearly 1.3 billion in revenue and was therefore widely praised by the jury. The film is nominated in 7 different categories and Kendrick Lamar could well make his mark with his soundtrack. The Compton rapper is now a regular at ceremonies, including winning the title of best rap performance at the Grammy and receiving a Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for DAMN, one of the most prestigious awards in the world. It is unprecedented for a rapper to receive a coronation of such magnitude.

We’ll find out at the Oscar ceremony if K.Dot will get the prestigious Best Original Song awards.
